Piccolo Tent at Assembly George Square Gardens
Right, confession time. Margaret Thatcher is not usually a name that makes me want to buy a ticket, but this isn’t that Margaret Thatcher. This is our Margaret, the drag legend, and we’ve been following her for years now. There’s even a magnet on our fridge at home from the time we met her after a show. She’s a bit of a fixture in the Rob-Lop household at this point, so when word came through that she was off to Hollywood, obviously we were there.
The premise, for anyone who somehow hasn’t met her yet: Maggie heads to Tinseltown to play herself in a musical remake of The Iron Lady, chasing a Prime MiniSTAR moment and possibly an Oscar-winning ugly cry along the way. It’s a drag musical romp from the team behind Kathy and Stella Solve a Murder and the producer of Unfortunate, so you already know the pedigree is there, and it shows.
Tucked away in the Piccolo Tent at Assembly George Square Gardens, this thing is quirky as hell, and that’s exactly the point. The delivery is flawless. The way she reads and plays the room is nothing short of genius. Honestly, this might be the only scenario in existence where I’d ever consider voting Tory, if this exact performer were somehow on the ballot.
We’ve seen her do this many times now and she has never once let us down. Another brilliant, ridiculous, perfectly pitched hour from Margaret, and we will absolutely be back next year to see whatever chaos she gets into next.
