Beyond at Pleasance Courtyard
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen Larry Dean now, and he just keeps getting better. The man has a comic engine most Fringe acts would sell a kidney for: timing so sharp it should come with a warning, and a knack for turning the everyday into something you’re still laughing about on the bus home.
This year’s hour takes us through his relationship with his partner, from the early courting days right through to wedded bliss, and it’s an absolute joy. Funny, warm, occasionally filthy, always generous. As a gay guy myself it hit close to home in the best way, but honestly, you don’t need any of that in common with him for this to land. It’s just great, properly crafted stand-up.
I watch his stuff on YouTube constantly and this is him at the top of his game live. No notes, no caveats. If Larry Dean is anywhere near you this year, go. That’s the whole review, really.
