We booked The Essence of Audrey on a whim after receiving a flyer from the actress’s mother, who herself had a charmingly Audrey-like presence. Sitting in the front row gave us a perfect view, and Helen Anker immediately drew us in, performing with a warmth and precision that made her portrayal of Audrey Hepburn utterly convincing. Her voice, her mannerisms, and the way she carried herself were pitch-perfect, and she had the audience captivated from the first moment.
What sets this show apart is the way Helen engages with the crowd. She treats the audience as though they’ve been invited to a private fundraiser at her home, weaving in humor and charm while recounting Audrey’s extraordinary life. The performance moves through Audrey’s childhood, the hardships of the war including some chilling wartime memories, her marriages, miscarriages, and lifelong struggles with anxiety. All of it is presented with a mix of intimacy, humor, and dignity that makes the story feel personal and immediate.
On top of being a brilliant acting showcase, the show also highlights Audrey’s humanitarian work with UNICEF, reminding the audience of the depth and generosity behind the icon.
It was a performance that felt alive and engaging from start to finish. Helen Anker’s portrayal was extraordinary, and the show itself is a heartfelt, inspiring experience. For me, it was five stars out of five – simply stunning.
